Darren McCarthy was an employee at a defense contractor company Elegra Global who sold five Soviet suitcase nukes to Abu Fayed prior to Day 6.

[edit] Day 6

After one of the suitcase nukes was detonated in Valencia, Los Angeles, he deleted all of his computer files and began to flee the city to escape from the nuclear fallout. When Abu Fayed contacted him again and offered him another $7 million to find an engineer, he agreed.

McCarthy picked up his girlfriend Rita Brady, who was unaware of his illegal dealings and wanted to leave the city. When he revealed to her how much money they were ingoing to get, she changed her attitude towards leaving the city. When McCarthy found out from his contact who would be the engineer that could help Fayed, it was revealed to be Morris O'Brian. The contact warned McCarthy that he wouldn't do the work willingly.

McCarthy and Rita then checked into a hotel room, and he contacted Fayed about the engineer. McCarthy fabricated a report that Morris' brother Timothy was in the hospital. When Morris learned off this news, he left CTU to see his brother. When CTU learned the information was false, Chloe contacted Morris to tell him the report was false, but before being able to turn around, he is captured by McCarthy.

After McCarthy realized a chopper was tailing them, he changed vehicles. While McCarthy broke into another vehicle, Morris was able to speak with Rita, telling her about the bombs and that CTU doesn't know about her. With this information, Rita decided to keep the $7 million for herself. So, while driving, Rita shot McCarthy and then dumped his body onto the street.
