The following is information about the people who work behind the scenes on 24. Includes information on the creators, writers and directors.
24 was created by Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow. Before 24, they created and worked together on the action series La Femme Nikita from 1997 to 2001. Many crew members from 24 also worked on La Femme Nikita. Cochran and Surnow are also executive producers and writers for the series and have written a large amount episodes for the series.
Joel Surnow left the series on February 12, 2008. His contract with 20th Century Fox was due to expire on April 30, but he requested an early release. "I did some soul-searching. I took [the strike] as an opportunity to write on my own and do other things. After doing 24, I don't know if I want to do a mainstream show again. I like what's going on in cable; there is an opportunity to stretch dramatically there, which is something I'm trying to do." The position held by Surnow was filled by showrunner/writer Howard Gordon.
Many 24 episodes are written by two people, some of main writing teams have been Joel Surnow and Michael Loceff; Robert Cochran and Howard Gordon; Evan Katz and Howard Gordon; and Manny Coto and Brannon Braga.
In each season, there is one main director who directs the majority of episodes in that season, usually 10 to 12 episodes. They'll also usually responsible for directing the premiere and finale episodes. Stephen Hopkins was the main director during Season 1, directing 12 episodes; he only directed in the first season. Jon Cassar joined the series in the middle of the first season and became the main director from Season 2 until Season 5. Beginning with Season 6, Brad Turner became the main director; although, Cassar still directed a number of episodes. Other key directors for the series include Bryan Spicer, Ian Toynton, Milan Cheylov, and Tim Iacofano. Director of Photography Rodney Charters has also directed episodes for the series. While producer/first assistant director/second unit director Michael Klick directed his first episodes during Season 7. Also, since 24 shoots two episodes at a time, the director will director two episodes in a row.
