The series has been nominated in multiple categories, such as acting, directing, editing, sound, music score, and various others. It's been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series every year except in 2007 during its sixth season at the Emmys. While, Kiefer Sutherland has been nominated every year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The fifth season was its most successful year at the Emmys. For the 2006 Emmys, the show earned 12 nominations, the most nominations a network TV series has ever had. Both the series and Kiefer Sutherland won their respective awards after being nominated every year previous. That year also earned Jon Cassar an award for directing. It was also the first year the show had been nominated in supporting categories; both Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart earned nominations.
